Write To Learn 2: 3 Post-It's for Article/Reflection
Post-it 1: First graders can write a;; the words they can say
Post-it 2: Students learn from output- talking and writing
Post-It 3: Students invariable read better if they write first.

Reflection:
"Students invariabley read better if they write first." - In my mind I always think about reading first and then writing...as if there is a solid, concrete order. In fact, I think that is probably how most of us teach - even with the use of the most cutting edge programs out there. There is no real order in my mind. The article mentions, "Write then read" - I almost think it is a chain that has 2 elements that repeat over and over that has no true beginning or ending...like a beaded necklace. A write my jumpstart the mind before reading a piece today by writing and then tomorrow the process may look similar, but a writer may read a quote related to an upcoming reading piece, write a prediction, and then read. The day after that, a write may write to build prior knowledge, read the piece, and then write passionately about the writer's craft in the piece that was noticed. Writing and reading is so intertwined - should there really be a beginning or end?

Revising Exercise

First:
As I walked over to them with a new spring in my steps, scolding myself for my silliness, I heard a noise come from the bars. With all of the noises of recess and giggling going on around me, I almost missed it. I stopped in my tracks. Barking filled my ears. Autumn pointed at me and barked again. She laughed vivaciously and what hurt the most was - Lucy joined in too! Our eyes lock for a second and Lucy immediately looked down. I dashed to my right. I burst into tears.

Revision:
On my way to them with a new energy in my steps, scolding myself for my silliness, I heard a noise come from the bars. I stopped cold in my tracks. Barking filled my ears...actual barking. Autumn pointed at me and repeated. She snickered and what hurt the most was - Lucy did too! Our eyes lock for a hot second and Lucy immediately looked down. I was paralyzed...

I need your opinions please....shred if needed! Please read the 3 intros to my personal piece and tell me which you like the most and maybe even why you do....Thanks! Megan :)

Hi Megan,

I read your three introductions, and I think the third one is the best. I partly like it because it combines the first two, and I feel like it encompasses the whole thought you are trying to convey to the reader. The middle one alone doesn't seem to have enough information. I'm looking forward to reading more about this awful Autumn Hayes!!! :-)

Jessica L.

Thanks for the feedback Jess - that is what my writing group thought too! :) Megan

Megan, this turned out so great! I love the way you wrote like a 10 and a half year old. It made the tough parts in her story so heart wrenching. Tahnks for all your help during 'writing group'

Megan, once I started, I couldn't stop reading your story! I really kept me interested and has a great message. Great job! ~Jess L.

This is a great story, Megan. I was curious to see how she was going to deal with the situation. I think that kids would really be able to connect with this story. I loved it. -Jess C.
